A lens filter is just a little thing whats pretty thin which screws on to the fron of your lens, and you usually cant tell its there (unless your a photographer haha) heres a pic of a lens filter http://www.digital-cameras.com/pic/3...er_uv_1221.jpg

Yeah I know what a lense hood is..

The lense filter seems pretty useful to me!

There are two basic schools of thought on protection filters:

1) Keeping a UV or 1a filter on the lens will protect the front surface from the elements = good idea

2) Keeping a UV or 1a filter on the lens adds two more air/glass surfaces which invite flare = bad idea

I posted my thoughts on the subject (and my support for using lens hoods) earlier in this thread...

I dont print or look at half the pictures i take
if i go out for some serious shootimg i will
take the filter off.
