The best tripod is the one you'll actually carry and use. A Manfrotto 3021 is a nice set of sticks that's good up to a 4X5 (maybe a 5X7 on a calm day), but may be more than a lot of folks are willing to carry. The 3001 is fine for most 35mm and DSLR use, provided you aren't using real long focal length lenses. I find a good ball head faster to use than a 3-way such as a 3047.
