well, in the photoshop area
-the latest version cs3 is out wich will be the priceist -there are lighter photoshop versions wich you most likely will find efficent -there are trial of photoshop located here of older versions for you to try Adobe - Downloads -and if you search adobe labs you may find there cs3 [the latest version] beta tester too but that will still have bugs and etc. Corel I have never used, I doubt it is as good since its not the industry standard and I know the lower photoshop version like elements are fairly afforable at least for you to get your head in the door |

The full blown version of Photoshop is overkill unless you make your living with it or have money to burn. Photoshop Elements, which is much le$$ expen$ive will do 98% of what you'll ever need. The diff in prices is 'cause one is an upgrade and the other a full ver. The software is the same, the installer is different. The installer on the upgrade looks for a previous version.
Corel Photopaint (that's what it used to be called) is a very good image editor in it's own right, so is Paint Shop Pro. Photopaint is part of the Corel Graphics Suite (CorelDraw is the primary app). I use CorelDraw V11 a lot for layout of trade show posters and publicity material, it's my fav vector graphics app and I've been using it since V3.0. I never did like Adobe Illustrator. If you're averse to spending money, give GIMP a try. I believe Will posted a link to the latest version in another thread. I've only played around with GIMP a little bit, but it looked pretty good. I have NO idea how color management works with it, but I'm sure that there is a discussion board on GIMP somewhere.
