I would have to say that I am in love with 50mm prime lenses no zooms no nothing. But hey thats just me... It is a pretty standard lens and even better if you are looking from something affordable. I would assume your wants and needs would be better with pro. a 18-55mm like will said because of the range you can achieve while still keeping it simple.

Ok thanks for the suggestions! As always I appreciate you taking the time to inform me. It makes ebay much more enjoyable when its not a crap shoot as to if the lense is good or not when you buy it!

I recently picked up the new Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 for my D80. At a street price of $450, it's about 1/3rd the cost of the one by Nikon. I couldn't see the difference in 8X10's between the two, so it was a no-brainer. The build quality of the Tamron isn't as high as the Nikon, but I don't beat the crap out of my gear...
Likewise, I bought the Tokina 12-24 rather than the Nikon 12-24. The Tokina was 1/2 the price and, IMO, is a BETTER lens than the Nikon (never thought I'd say that about a 3rd party lens). My 80-200 f/2.8 is also a Tokina...

You bet, the 18-55 kit lens that comes with the D50 and D40 is in that price range and is EXCELLENT! The only downside of the lens is it's max f/stop is a tad slow for available light work, which is why I bought the Tamron. When I bought my D80, I opted for that 18-55 rather than the 18-135 that Nikon introduced for the D80 as the 18-55 has much less distortion at the wide end.
