The 50 he's talkin about is a prime lens, it doesn't zoom. 50mm (about 2 inches) is the "normal" lens for 35mm film and a short portrait lens for APS-C digital. "Normal" is determined by the diagonal of the image area, which is 43mm for 35mm film, so 50mm is considered normal.
