It's a Kapok tree, the seed pods are shaped like tiny footballs. and upon drying and splitting open it releases thousands of seeds on parachutes to be carried by the wind to the ground and its germination spots... The "thorns" are not fragile or poisonous, but will leave a heck of a wound if you should bang or brush against the trunk... We grow them at home, and use the fluff for pillows and stuffing in mattresses, cushions etc....
