No, the d40 is an 8mp camera. And secondhand can be had for much cheaper.
The problem with point and shoots is that they are generally crappy, no matter how much you spend.
But if you have to get one because its "small", look at the new fujifilm. Its 12mp and has two sensors in it to eliminate image blur. Its pretty sweet, even if it is just a point and shoot.
And Abbey, dont give up on DSLRs. They are def the better choice.
